March 2018: Path to Excellence Phase Two – A desk review of patient experience and perception in South Tyneside and Sunderland
In order to assist discussions taking place amongst staff from both South Tyneside and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trusts, a desk review was undertaken of any national benchmarking surveys to allow comparison of the performance of the Trusts (South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust) with national standards.
In addition, engagement was also undertaken with patients from both Trusts to further understand patient experience and perception in relation to the above clinical review service areas.
March 2018: Path to Excellence Phase Two – Seeking staff views survey summary report
A survey was designed to capture views from frontline staff in South Tyneside and Sunderland on the challenges and difficulties they currently face in everyday service delivery and to seek their ideas on how to further improve the quality of patient care
In total, 710 people members of staff responded to the questionnaire from a total of 4246 staff who were invited to take part who work in the areas impacted by Phase two. This represents an overall response rate of 16.7%. Of these 710 responses 580 members of staff responded to most of the questionnaire.

July 2018: Path to Excellence Phase Two – Patient Experience Survey analysis – emergency and planned care
To help inform the clinical service review process for Phase Two of Path to Excellence two surveys were designed to capture the opinions and experiences of individuals who have accessed emergency care services or planned surgery and outpatient care at either South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust or City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust within the last two years.
This report summarises the feeback from patients with experience of services that are being reviewed during phase two of Path to Excellence.
July 2018: Path to Excellence Phase Two – Staff events feedback
As part of Phase two of the Path to Excellence programme, three events were held for staff.

September 2018: Thematic review to inform the development of an evaluation criteria
To help inform the clinical service review process for Phase Two, a thematic review was undertaken of all insight reports produced following engagement with members of the public, patients, staff and stakeholders, as part of the Path to Excellence programme.
The purpose of this activity was to produce a list of general themes in relation to what members of the public, patients, staff and stakeholders want from future services i.e. creating a ‘desirable’ list of factors. This list will then be tested and refined before development of final evaluation criteria which will allow different
delivery model options for Phase Two to be explored and evaluated against.
November 2018: Draft Case for Change Roadshow survey feedback summary report
Following publication of the Case for Change, a ten week period of public engagement commenced on Saturday 13th October 2018.
The aim of this activity was to socialise the issues, explain the current gaps in quality, and allow opportunity for patients and the public to understand why we must change and share their views on what’s important to them when accessing hospital services and receiving hospital care. It also provides stakeholders and the public with opportunities to influence the process, providing decision makers with valuable insight about the draft ‘Case for Change’.
During this ten week period, engagement teams went out in the community to speak to patients using local hospitals and healthcare services as well as attending a series of key stakeholder meetings. Individuals were invited to complete a short survey designed to capture their thoughts and opinion.
The survey was additionally available online for individuals to complete, with 865 people completing paper versions and 165 people taking part online, a total of 1030 respondents.
This report summarises the feedback from this survey.
